The Monk Seals Cave Or Medvedina Špilja
The cave is located on the southeast side of the island Biševo and it has been protected since 1967. The name of the cave originates from the fact that the Mediterranean monk seal massively populated it, today it's an endangered species. It's special geomorphologically because the entrance into the Monk Seal Cave is quite big and wide, it narrows completely towards the interior. The length of the cave is 160m and it ends with a small shore that only small ships as speedboats can reach. This cave is difficult to spot when cruising away from the shore, due to the unusually narrow, almost vertical, thirty meters high opening in the stone gorge.

As we come into the tall gate of the cave, guests will enjoy the blue light up the cave interior of the cave as the light penetrates through the passage. Medvidina (Monk Seal) cave is located in the southeastern part of the island, near Cape Biskup. The interior of the cave consists of a main, spacious hall and a low winding canal which, after about seventy meters, ends with a small beach where a sea seal could be found several decades ago It is necessary to say that our tours are very versatile and tailor-made which means we can modify the private boat trip to the condition at sea and the demands of the guests within the itinerary of the trip. Unlike the Blue Cave, the Monk Seal Cave is not a widespread stop for daily boat tours, so you won't usually come across a lot of boats or people there.
The small history of tourism on the Biševo island
The Mediterranean monk seal was exterminated by fishermen, fighting for their crust of bread in this area. In addition to Modra and Medvidina, there are eight smaller and larger caves on Biševo, which you will encounter while sailing right along the coast of the island. After the caves, after all, Biševo got its name - L'ísola dei busi (island of holes, on the Latin basis). Thanks to its special natural beauties, Biševo has often been discovered as a tourist destination during the past decades, after which, again, it would fall into oblivion. In the 1980s, members of the Vienna Tourist Club visited Biševo in an organized manner, and the tourist promotion of the island in Austria began with published articles by Baron Eugen Ransonnet, a Viennese painter, traveler, and adventurer. Baron Ransonnet often sailed the Adriatic and thus discovered the beauties of Biševo.
Viewed from the sea, Biševo leaves the impression of a steep and inaccessible island, but these are merely only first impressions. When the northwestern cape Pernikoza is sailed, tame bays on the west coast of the island open like meanders. The largest and most beautiful sandy bays are Salbunara and Biševska luka. Salbunara, a smaller bay, is an old fishing village with several houses. The larger one, Biševska luka, hides the small town of Porat. The beautiful sandy beach in summer is full of tourists, both those who stay on Biševo and those who are brought here by tourist boats from the whole middle Dalmatia.
